Lake Taal, located on the island of Luzon in the northern Philippines, has one of the most unusual geographical features on Earth. It is one of only a few places in the world known to contain a third-order island, creating a remarkable chain of land and water formations.
In simple terms, Lake Taal is situated on the island of Luzon, and within the lake lies Volcano Island. Inside Volcano Island is another body of water known as Crater Lake, and within that lake sits a tiny landform called Vulcan Point.
Volcano Island is the site of Taal Volcano’s historic eruptions and is the reason the lake contains sulfur-rich waters. Over time, the volcano’s crater filled with water, forming Crater Lake. Rising from this small lake is Vulcan Point, a small rocky island that completes this rare natural arrangement.
Another Extraordinary Nested Island Discovery in Canada
Although Vulcan Point is famous for being part of this unusual geographic structure, it is not the only example of an island inside a lake on an island inside a lake on an island.
Canada is home to another, much larger example. This unnamed island covers approximately four acres and sits inside a small, unnamed lake. That lake itself is located on a slightly larger island, which is surrounded by a network of narrow finger-shaped lakes. The location lies about 90 kilometers inland from the southern coast of Victoria Island in Canada’s Arctic region.
Those interested in exploring this unusual place through satellite imagery can search for the coordinates 69.793° N, 108.241° W on Google Maps. By zooming through the layers of lakes and islands, viewers can observe the fascinating sequence of natural formations.
The unnamed island was discovered in 2012 after many hours of examining Google Earth images by Ken Jennings, a person many people recognize. Jennings holds the record for the longest winning streak in the history of the television quiz show Jeopardy!, winning 74 consecutive games and earning approximately $2.5 million.
Canada’s Remarkable Collection of Island and Lake Records
Because Canada contains nearly three million lakes, many of which have islands of their own, there may still be numerous undiscovered third-order islands hidden across the country.
Canada already holds several impressive records involving islands, lakes, and nested waterways. It is home to the world’s largest lake located on an island: Nettilling Lake on Baffin Island. It also contains the world’s largest island found within a lake: Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron.
In addition, Canada has the largest lake located on an island within a lake, which is Lake Manitou on Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron. Another record belongs to Treasure Island, located in Mindemoya Lake on Manitoulin Island, recognized as the largest island within a lake that is itself located on an island within a lake.
These extraordinary examples highlight the complexity and beauty of Earth’s landscapes, showing how islands, lakes, and waterways can combine to create some of the planet’s most fascinating natural formations.
