With a mix of natural sunlight and artificial illumination, much of the planet is surrounded by light. Some cities, however, stand out as particularly bright, thanks to a combination of long daylight periods, extensive artificial lighting, and significant levels of light pollution.
Using several measurements, including average daily sunshine, artificial light levels, and light pollution, the British optical company Feel Good Contacts compiled a ranking of the ten brightest capital cities around the globe. Each city was given an overall light score out of 10.
1. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, takes the top position as the brightest city in the world, achieving an overall light score of 7.11 out of 10.
The ranking considers several factors, including artificial illumination, light pollution, and the amount of daylight the city receives. Riyadh performs strongly across these categories. The desert capital experiences an average of 8.84 hours of daylight and has a brightness measurement of 18.9 millicandelas per square meter.
With its intense sunshine and extensive illumination after dark, Riyadh stands out as one of the most brightly lit urban centers in the Middle East.
2. Moscow, Russia
Moscow ranks second with an overall light score of 6.5 out of 10. It is also the only city in Eastern Europe to appear among the ten brightest capitals in the ranking.
The Russian capital records a brightness level of 20.3 millicandelas per square meter, while its average daily daylight reaches only 5.21 hours. At the same time, the city has approximately 20,200 candelas of artificial brightness.
Because Moscow experiences long and dark winters, artificial illumination plays an especially important role in the city. During the colder months, the combination of street lighting, illuminated buildings, and seasonal decorations can make the urban skyline particularly striking.
3. Washington DC, United States
Washington DC occupies third place with an overall light score of 6.13 out of 10.
According to the Feel Good Contacts data, the American capital has a brightness level of 17.9 millicandelas per square meter. It receives an average of 6.93 hours of daylight each day and records approximately 17,700 candelas of artificial brightness.
With its numerous historic structures, monuments, and internationally recognized landmarks, Washington DC becomes especially atmospheric after dark, when carefully designed lighting highlights many of the places associated with American history.
4. London, United Kingdom
London, one of the world's best-known cities and a major center of history and culture, ranks fourth among the brightest capitals with a score of 5.87 out of 10.
Located along the River Thames, London receives an average of just 4.47 hours of daily sunshine. Its brightness measurement is 11.4 millicandelas per square meter, while its artificial brightness level reaches approximately 11,200 candelas.
Despite its relatively limited sunshine, the city's extensive artificial illumination keeps its streets, buildings, and landmarks bright well after sunset.
5. Buenos Aires, Argentina
Buenos Aires is the only South American capital included in the world's ten brightest cities.
The Argentine capital enjoys an average of 6.92 hours of sunshine per day, giving it more daylight than both Moscow and London. Nevertheless, its overall light score is considerably lower at 4.79 out of 10.
Buenos Aires records an artificial brightness level of approximately 12,200 candelas and a brightness measurement of 12.4 millicandelas per square meter.
The combination of natural daylight and extensive urban illumination places the city firmly among the world's brightest capitals.
6. Athens, Greece
Athens ranks sixth with an overall light score of 4.58 out of 10 and receives approximately 7.6 hours of sunshine on an average day.
Greece's capital and largest city has a brightness measurement of 10.3 millicandelas per square meter, along with an artificial brightness level of approximately 10,200 candelas.
Known worldwide as one of the great cultural centers of the ancient world, Athens offers a different kind of brightness as well. Beyond its measurable levels of natural and artificial illumination, the city's historic landmarks, ancient ruins, and lively streets give it a distinctive presence after sunset.
7. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Dubai records the highest average number of daily sunshine hours among the cities included in this ranking, receiving approximately 9.61 hours of sunlight each day.
However, its artificial brightness measurement is comparatively lower, at around 4,180 candelas, which reduces its overall position in the ranking. Dubai receives an overall light score of 4.46 out of 10 and has a brightness measurement of 4.3 millicandelas per square meter.
Even with these relatively lower measurements, the desert metropolis remains one of the most visually striking and fascinating destinations in the Middle East. Its illuminated skyline and modern architecture create a spectacular urban landscape after dark.
8. Madrid, Spain
Madrid takes eighth place with a total light score of 4.37 out of 10.
The Spanish capital receives substantial sunshine, averaging approximately 7.59 hours of daylight each day. After sunset, the city remains brightly illuminated, with historic buildings, streets, and public spaces continuing to shine throughout the night.
Madrid records an artificial brightness level of approximately 9,270 candelas per square meter, contributing to its position among the world's brightest capital cities.
8. Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon shares eighth place with Madrid, receiving exactly the same overall light score of 4.37 out of 10.
The Portuguese capital has well-illuminated streets and public spaces that allow visitors to continue exploring the city after daylight disappears. Its evening lights create a lively atmosphere throughout the urban center.
Lisbon receives an average of 7.69 hours of sunshine each day and records approximately 9,050 candelas per square meter in artificial brightness.
10. Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo, the capital of Japan and one of the world's most populous urban areas, completes the ranking in tenth place with a light score of 4.31 out of 10.
The city receives relatively little daily sunshine compared with several other capitals on the list, averaging only about 5.14 hours.
Tokyo compensates for its limited natural daylight with extensive artificial illumination. Its artificial lighting score reaches approximately 9,170, helping the city remain brightly lit long after sunset.
The result is a vast urban landscape that continues to glow throughout the night, making Tokyo one of the world's most recognizable illuminated cities.
