Maple Leaves in Full Fall Foliage Colors
Autumn is one of my favorite seasons, and it is also the best time of year for photography. I have mentioned before how disappointing it can be when fall arrives and the leaves show little color or the display is almost completely missing.

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons, and it is also the best time of year for photography. I have mentioned before how disappointing it can be when fall arrives and the leaves show little color or the display is almost completely missing.
In my area, a truly impressive year for natural fall foliage happens only occasionally, perhaps about once every five years. The native trees that usually provide the best autumn scenery around Vancouver and the Fraser Valley include Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) and Vine Maple (Acer circinatum). Cottonwoods can also create beautiful displays in some years.
However, the Red Maple (Acer rubrum) in my backyard is always a reliable source of bright autumn color. It almost never disappoints and regularly produces vibrant leaves that are perfect for photographing.
Correcting the Maple Identification
The colorful leaves shown above were originally thought to belong to a Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum). After discussing the tree with several people, including an arborist, I decided to research the identification again.
It turns out that the tree is actually a Red Maple (Acer rubrum). Making an incorrect identification is always frustrating, but revisiting the details helped reveal the true species.
A Reliable Source of Fall Color
This Red Maple has proven itself as a dependable autumn performer, producing attractive leaf colors almost every year, even when the weather is rainy.
By the middle of October, I usually begin wondering whether the fall foliage season will be impressive or disappointing. At that point, there is always uncertainty because some years bring brilliant colors while others do not.
Even during a good foliage season, constant rain can quickly ruin the display by knocking leaves to the ground before they can be fully enjoyed. Because I have experienced this situation before, I photographed these maple leaves against a plain white background on a rainy day. This way, I could preserve the beautiful colors regardless of the changing weather.
The Many Colors of Red Maple Leaves
Although its name suggests that it only produces red leaves, the Red Maple actually creates a wide range of autumn shades.
Its foliage can transform into soft yellow, bright golden tones, vivid orange, and deep crimson red. The exact colors often depend on the weather conditions during the growing season, with temperature and seasonal changes influencing the final display.
A Particularly Beautiful Fall Season
Fortunately, this was a wonderful year for autumn foliage in my area. The colors were especially impressive, and I was able to photograph many of the seasonal changes without having the rain interfere.
Capturing these brilliant maple leaves was a rewarding experience and a reminder of why fall remains such a special season for nature lovers and photographers.
