The scarlet macaw is one of the most spectacular birds you are likely to see. Its feathers display an extraordinary mix of bright colors, making the bird look almost like a flying rainbow of candy. Scarlet macaws live in tropical rainforests, where many other jungle animals have green coloring that helps them disappear among leaves, trees and other vegetation.

The scarlet macaw seems to take the complete opposite approach. Instead of blending into the forest, it stands out with an incredibly colorful appearance. At first, you might wonder why such a noticeable bird would choose to wear such bright feathers rather than trying to remain hidden.

Those vivid colors, however, serve an important purpose. Scarlet macaws use their colorful plumage as part of a defense strategy against predators. Their appearance is an example of a pattern known as “disruptive coloration.”

How Disruptive Coloration Protects Macaws

Disruptive coloration is particularly common among animals that live in groups. Scarlet macaws are flocking birds, meaning that they spend much of their lives together in large groups.

If a predator such as a large bird of prey attempts to attack one of the macaws, the entire flock may take flight at once. As dozens of brightly colored birds move together, the contrasting patterns and colors of their feathers can make the outlines of individual birds difficult to distinguish.

This visual confusion can make it harder for a predator to concentrate on a single target and successfully capture it. In this way, the scarlet macaw’s beautiful appearance is actually part of its survival strategy.

Scarlet macaws are not the only animals that rely on disruptive coloration. Similar protective patterns can be found throughout nature, including the stripes of zebras and the varied markings seen on many fish that travel together in coral reef environments.

The Powerful Beak of the Scarlet Macaw

Another immediately noticeable feature of the scarlet macaw is its enormous, powerful bill. These birds enjoy eating a variety of foods, including fruit, berries, seeds and nuts.

Their large beaks are strong enough to break through the shells of even very hard nuts, allowing the macaws to reach food that would be difficult for many other animals to access.

A Very Loud Call

That impressive beak is also connected to another unmistakable characteristic of the scarlet macaw: its extremely powerful voice.

The forests of Central and South America where these birds live cover enormous areas, so being able to communicate across long distances is important for animals that live together in flocks. Scarlet macaws produce strong, far-carrying calls that can travel through the rainforest.

For anyone standing close to one of these birds, the sound can be surprisingly loud and even painful to the ears. Their calls are certainly not easy to overlook.

Meet Tico the Scarlet Macaw

You can also meet our beautiful scarlet macaw, Tico, who serves as one of our Passport to the Pacific animal ambassadors.

If Tico decides to greet you, you may want to have your earplugs ready. A friendly “hello” from a parrot like Tico could easily become one of the loudest greeti
